Turkey Tail also knows as Coriolus Versicolor or Trametes Versicolor is a medicinal mushroom that has been used in traditional Eastern medicine for centuries. Even some Western countries are starting to use extracts from Trametes mushrooms to treat diseases like cancer, hepatitis, herpes, chonic fatigue and other ailments. Health authority website WebMD, has said the following about Trametes Versicolor:
"Recently, researchers have started to isolate and identify substances in coriolus that might act like pharmaceutical drugs. Two of these substances are polysaccharide peptide (PSP) and polysaccharide krestin (PSK). Scientists think these chemicals might be able to fight cancer and boost the immune system".
The FDA has recently approved the use of a Turkey Tail extract for clinical trials to be used on cancer patients. The research has been a collaboration of reaearchers from Bastyr University, the University of Washington, and was funded by the National Institutes of Health. The aim is to find out how effective Turkey Tail is on boosting the immune system along with traditional cancer therapy. Meanwhile in Japan, Turkey Tail mushroom extracts have been used for over 30 years to treat cancer patients.
